The Parador de Santillana Altamira has reopened its doors after five years of closure and an extensive €8 million renovation that has upgraded its rating from 3 to 4 stars. This transformation is designed to enhance the visitor experience through improvements in sustainability, accessibility, comfort and interior design, all while preserving its historic charm and the Cantabrian inspiration that defines its refreshed identity. The establishment’s new chapter can be appreciated through a different way of experiencing its spaces —now more serene, comfortable and harmoniously connected to its setting. Traditional regional architecture blends seamlessly with contemporary solutions and a design approach that conveys authenticity without compromising functionality. The Parador de Santillana Altamira is one of the most modern properties within the Paradores collection, fully adapted to the expectations of today’s travelers and reinforced as a premier accommodation option in the town of Santillana del Mar. This refurbishment has optimized the interior layout and expanded the accommodation capacity by adding three new rooms as part of a broader initiative to elevate the overall guest experience. Enhancing comfort has been a key focus, with acoustic improvements and upgrades to the heating and air conditioning systems that incorporate advanced technologies like aerothermal energy and natural gas, ensuring a more stable, efficient and pleasant environment throughout guests’ stay. Sustainability plays a central role in the Parador’s transformation. The new measures will cut the Parador’s carbon footprint by 85%, equivalent to preventing the emission of 110 tons of CO₂ annually —or the equivalent of planting 5,200 trees. This renovation offers a fresh interpretation of the historic accommodation, where modernization extends beyond visible design to enhance the building’s energy performance and its ability to operate with a lower environmental impact. Accessibility has also taken on a more prominent role in the hotel's design. The project included upgrading the elevator, creating an accessible room on the ground floor and adapting the common restrooms to accommodate guests with reduced mobility. These enhancements make the facilities more user-friendly and reinforce the establishment’s inclusive ethos, offering spaces that are easier to navigate and designed to welcome a diverse range of visitors.
One of the most striking transformations is found in the interior design, crafted with a refined, elegant and timeless style. This renovation honors and enhances the region’s traditional architecture through a mix of reclaimed local furniture, handcrafted pieces, clean lines, high-quality materials and a color palette inspired by the surrounding landscape. The result is a calm and welcoming atmosphere where every element helps strengthen the unique identity of the place. Craftsmanship, lighting and the careful selection of textures and finishes play a vital role in shaping this renewed character. The reopening of the Parador de Santillana Altamira is part of Paradores’ extensive €300 million modernization initiative, aimed at revitalizing the network ahead of its 100th anniversary in 2028. Paradores also operates the Parador de Santillana Gil Blas in Santillana del Mar, which reopened its doors on April 30 following an extensive renovation.

The nearest airport is Seve Ballesteros-Santander, with the closest port also located in Santander.
