Castile-La Mancha by train: six autumn tourist routes from Madrid
In October and November, Castile-La Mancha offers a selection of tourist and themed trains that turn a day trip from Madrid into a unique, comfortable experience closely tied to the local area. The itineraries combine rides on a special train or AVE high-speed train, bus transfers, guided tours, museums, tastings, castles, caves, urban heritage sites, La Mancha landscapes, and unique destinations, with trips to Alcalá del Júcar, Tembleque, Consuegra, Guadalajara, Albacete, Cuenca, and Almadén. On October 3, the Toledo La Mancha Train kicks off the season with a route that departs from the Madrid Chamartín-Clara Campoamor station, stops at Madrid Atocha–Cercanías, and arrives in Tembleque. This is the starting point of a guided tour of the heritage of a town in La Mancha begins, introducing visitors to one of the most recognizable sights in Castile-La Mancha. The tour then continues to Consuegra, where the Main Square and the Town Hall Museum offer a glimpse into local history before some free time for lunch. In Orgaz, the medieval castle will transport visitors back to the era of knights and damsels. The day continues with a visit to Azafranes Lozano, dedicated to one of the region’s signature products, and concludes at the Castle of Consuegra and the windmills. The combination of defensive heritage, agricultural tradition, and the La Mancha horizon makes this outing a particularly visually appealing experience, marked by the contrast between the castle’s grandeur and the wide-open expanse of the golden fields. On October 17, the Alcarria Train is heading to Guadalajara and its cultural wealth. The tour includes the Palace of El Infantado —built in the late 15th-century Isabelline Gothic style— the Convent of La Piedad, the Cotilla Palace, the Chapel of Luis de Lucena, the Co-Cathedral of Santa María, the Mendoza Ducal Crypt in the Church of San Francisco, and the Pantheon of the Duchess of Sevillano. The proposal brings together architecture, history, and religious heritage for a full day of urban exploration.
On October 31, the Alcalá del Júcar Train will connect Madrid with Albacete by the high-speed AVE train and will continue by bus to Casas Ibáñez, where you’ll visit a winery for a wine tasting and an appetizer. Afterward, Alcalá del Júcar offers free time for lunch, a guided tour of the town, admission to the castle, and access to one of its caves, including a drink. The site, located along the Júcar River and perched on a hill, offers one of the most evocative scenic experiences on the itinerary.
The thematic map is further extended in November. On November 14, the Mercury Train invites you to explore the Almadén Mining Park with a guide specializing in World Heritage sites, including a tour of the San Teodoro Enclosure, the Engine House, the San Aquilino Headframe, the Mercury Museum, the San Rafael Miners’ Hospital, and the Almadén Mine. The experience includes a ride on the mining train, safety equipment, and a minibus tour of the park.
On November 21, the Cutlery Train stops in Albacete, featuring a visit to the Cutlery Museum, a workshop-demonstration on the traditional assembly of a pocket knife, a Manchego cheese tasting, and a guided tour of the city center, including the Passage of Lodares. On November 28, the Cuenca Paleontological and Heritage Train will include stops at the Cathedral of Santa María and San Julián, the Castile-La Mancha Paleontological Museum, and free optional visits to the Museum of Abstract Art and the Roberto Polo Castile-La Mancha Center for Contemporary Art.
All tours follow the same format —a round-trip on the same day with numbered seats— and have the following prices: 50 euros for adults, 20 euros for children under 14, and free for children under four who do not occupy a seat. The result is an autumn rail season featuring a wide variety of itineraries, with each train offering a unique gateway to Castile-La Mancha.

Castile-La Mancha is located in the south-central part of Spain. Its main access routes are the A–2, A–3, A–4, A–5, and A–31 highways; the AVE high-speed rail network, with stations in Toledo, Ciudad Real, Puertollano, Cuenca, Guadalajara-Yebes, and Albacete; and the airports in Madrid–Barajas, Albacete, and Ciudad Real.
