Birding 2026

Birdwatching Familiarisation Trip

Between 24 February and 5 March 2026, international tourism professionals took part in a familiarisation trip through Extremadura and Andalusia, discovering Spain’s enormous potential in nature, culture and gastronomy tourism.

The tour began in Mérida, a key destination for Roman heritage in Spain (more information at spain.info). From there, the group explored natural sites such as La Serena and Monfragüe National Park, renowned for their rich birdlife and unique landscapes. One of the highlights was taking part in the FIO Extremadura Birdwatching Fair, where professional meetings were held with local businesses and organisations, strengthening opportunities for collaboration. The experience was rounded off with culinary delights and a visit to Cáceres, a World Heritage City (also featured on spain.info).

In Andalusia, the itinerary included destinations such as Vejer de la Frontera and key natural areas such as the Laguna de La Janda and Doñana National Park, one of Europe’s most important wetlands (with extensive information on spain.info). Cultural experiences were also enjoyed in El Rocío and Villamanrique de la Condesa, introducing participants to unique local traditions. The trip concluded in Seville, with visits to its main monuments and historic neighbourhoods, rounding off a comprehensive destination experience.
