The Holy Grail Route: an undiscovered spiritual journey through the Region of Valencia
From Barracas to Valencia, an itinerary linking 18 towns and centuries of history
The Holy Grail Route offers a unique journey into the heart of the Region of Valencia.Spanning 120 kilometres and 18 municipalities, the route follows ancient Roman roads, royal paths and greenways, culminating at the Cathedral of Valencia, which has been safeguarding the revered Holy Chalice since the 15th century. This journey blends pilgrimage, history, art and nature, becoming a beacon of cultural and spiritual tourism. Starting from the high plateau of Barracas (Castellón), the route makes its way through varied landscapes, mountains, valleys and plains descending alongside the Palancia River until they meet the Mediterranean Sea. The route is split into seven main stages with an optional loop through Montanejos and Cirat, following former railway lines, now the Ojos Negros and Xurra Greenways, and shares sections with the El Cid Route and the Saint Vincent Martyr Route. Among the highlights of this route are places such as the Santa Cave of Altura and the Valldecrist Charterhouse, which stand as testimonies to a deep spiritual heritage. Segorbe, Navajas and Sagunto invite you to take some time out to experience their rich cultural and culinary heritage, while towns such as El Puig de Santa María and Alboraya offer the tranquil beauty of the Mediterranean landscape before reaching Valencia. The crowning jewel is the Cathedral of Valencia, consecrated to Saint Mary by King James I in 1238 following the city's conquest. Within its walls, the Holy Chalice, brought by Alfonso V of Aragon in 1424 and safeguarded since 1437, is venerated in a chapel restored in 1916. The Holy See acknowledged its spiritual importance by declaring a quinquennial Eucharistic Jubilee Year in 2015.
