Green Spain: the great European surf route between the Atlantic and the Cantabrian Sea
More than 1,500 miles of coastline along which internationally renowned spots coexist with surf reserves
The coasts of Green Spain, stretching over more than 1,500 miles across Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, and the Basque Country, have established one of the most diverse surfing geographies in Europe. Along this coastline, constant swells, Atlantic landscapes, and a solid tourist infrastructure allow for year-round surfing. From urban beaches to the wildest spots and big wave breaks, this area has become an international destination capable of integrating sport, culture, gastronomy, and landscape. The diversity of the Cantabrian coastline defines the appeal of surfing in Green Spain. Sandy beaches, rocky coves, cliffs, and estuaries form a geographically complex territory, resulting in a vast and rich variety of spots suitable for all levels. The swells of the Atlantic and the Cantabrian Sea guarantee quality waves 365 days a year, making this corridor a must-visit destination for surfers traveling the coast in search of varied conditions. Cantabria has played a significant role in the development of surfing in Spain. Some of the country's first surfers, specialized shops, and schools emerged on its beaches—a tradition that is reflected today in an established ecosystem with over thirty clubs and nearly fifty schools. Spaces such as Somo, Loredo, Langre, or Galizano, integrated within the Ribamontán al Mar Surf Nature Reserve, exemplify the significance of this tourist resource, complemented by other key locations such as Suances, Noja or San Vicente de la Barquera.

In the Basque Country, where surfing was introduced early on, around fifty breaks create an established offering that combines sport and culture. Towns and villages such as Bakio, Zarautz, Sopela, or Mundaka form a coastal landscape where surfing coexists with a distinguished range of gastronomic and cultural attractions. This destination is also supported by a network of services organized around Surfing Euskadi, which includes schools, surf camps, specialized accommodation, and a host of other services linked to this tourist product. In Asturias, surfing extends along its approximately 215 miles of coastline, with prominent spots like Tapia de Casariego, Salinas, Rodiles, Gijón, Ribadesella, or Llanes. In many of these locations, the sea visually merges with the summits of the Picos de Europa, creating one of the most beautiful landscapes for surfing in Europe. The annual calendar includes events such as the Tapia International Surf Open and the Salinas International Longboard Festival, which reinforce the destination’s international profile. The route culminates in Galicia, where beaches such as Pantín, Doniños, Razo, O Rostro, Patos, or A Lanzada round off the map of a territory deeply linked to the Atlantic Ocean. Pantín hosts the international Pantín Classic Galicia Pro championship every year, while other beaches accommodate both beginners and advanced-level practice. More than a sport, surfing has established itself as a culture and lifestyle that shapes the Green Spain tourist experience. Among internationally renowned waves, surfing nature reserves, and landscapes in which the Atlantic dialogues with mountains over 6,500 feet high, northern Spain serves up a unique itinerary of nature, sport, and maritime tradition.
