Five Spanish destinations among the world’s best for sleep tourism
Discover the top Spanish cities for rest and recovery
As rest becomes an increasingly important priority for travelers, sleep tourism has emerged as a strategic trend for destinations looking to stand out through their wellness attractions. According to the new Sleep Tourism Guide created by Kayak with Dr. Jason Ellis, Professor of Sleep Science at Northumbria University in the UK, five Spanish cities rank among the world’s best for holidays designed to ensure visitors leave feeling well rested. This ranking assesses noise pollution to identify the quietest places, air quality for comfortable breathing, and political stability as a key factor ensuring peace of mind. It also considers the availability of spa accommodation and their proximity to natural surroundings, features that promote rest and relaxation. Granada has been awarded 13th place in the global ranking. Situated in Andalusia, at the foot of the Sierra Nevada and not far from the Mediterranean, this city offers a unique blend of historic heritage and natural beauty. Its dry climate, historic neighborhoods like the Albaicín, and the allure of the Alhambra make it an ideal destination. What’s more, its surroundings are perfectly suited to active and wellness tourism. Its low noise pollution and strong feeling of safety rank Granada among the world’s best cities in which to relax.

Gijón, on the Asturian coast, comes in at number 21 on the list. This city pairs urban life with a deep connection to the Cantabrian Sea and natural spaces like the Atlantic Botanic Garden. Committed to sustainability, the destination offers green trails, an accessible coastline, and cuisine rooted in regional products, while its relaxed atmosphere and clean air reinforce its status as a city in which to disconnect. Menorca stands out for its low noise pollution and excellent air quality. This Balearic island, declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, is widely appreciated for its pristine beaches, rural trails, and nature parks such as S’Albufera des Grau. Thanks to a mild Mediterranean climate and range of hotels also oriented towards wellness and disconnection, Menorca has placed 26th on the list. Santander, the capital of Cantabria in northern Spain, stretches along the bay of the same name, surrounded by beaches, parks, and cliffs. It’s home to spaces like the Piquío Gardens or the Magdalena Peninsula, perfect for peaceful strolls. Meanwhile, its medium size and range of tourist services promote a balanced experience, offering both leisure and relaxation. What’s more, the city was awarded the highest score for safety and ranks 29th overall.

Palma de Mallorca brings together coastline, historic architecture, and a well-established range of wellness activities, as 14% of its accommodation is equipped with spa facilities. The nearby Serra de Tramuntana mountains add a key natural component for those seeking to recharge their batteries in a diverse environment, helping the destination to secure 38th place in the ranking.
