Extremadura under the stars: routes, viewpoints, and astrotourism

Dark skies, Starlight certifications, and unique experiences drive astrotourism

Extremadura has consolidated its leading role in astrotourism thanks to a network of unique infrastructure and a regional strategy combining science, sustainability, and tourism. Dark skies, Starlight certifications, applied technology, and a diversified offering have made this community a European benchmark for astronomical observation. From viewpoints that reveal constellations to signposted night trails, including facilities like the El Anillo Astronomical Observatory, the region offers unique experiences for both enthusiasts and the general public. Celestial viewpoints: science and technology outdoors One of Extremadura's most unique attractions is its network of celestial viewpoints: stone structures backlit to project star maps between 10 p.m. and midnight. These educational tools, resistant to extreme conditions and automatically activated, offer a visual and informative experience that allows users to identify constellations from their exact location. This network forms part of a strategy that emphasizes innovation and knowledge as the pillars of sustainable tourism. Night trails: the night as heritage Set within landscapes of high natural and cultural value, these night trails allow visitors to discover nocturnal biodiversity in Extremadura with all the senses. This program includes routes such as Fuentes de León—featuring prehistoric caves, interpretive panels, and karst formations—as well as active trails in La Siberia, Logrosán, and Alconchel. The routes, illuminated solely by the natural light of the sky, evoke ancient astronomical-observation practices linked to agriculture or solar rituals.

El Anillo Astronomical Observatory Located next to the Gabriel y Galán reservoir, in Cáceres, this center offers solar and nocturnal observation with advanced equipment: Dobson telescopes and solar telescopes, specialized filters, interferometers, and augmented-reality panels. This site can only be visited with companies accredited in the Extremadura, Buenas Noches strategy, aiming to reinforce its educational and tourism value. Starlight certifications and exceptional sites This region includes four territories that have been certified as Starlight Tourism Destinations: the Monfragüe Biosphere Reserve, the region of Las Hurdes, the cross-border Alqueva Lake area, and El Chorrerón in Moraleja. Alongside these, tourists can explore recommended destinations such as the Villuercas-Ibores-Jara Geopark and the dolmens of Lácara and Valencia de Alcántara, where the importance of astronomy can still be witnessed in their orientation. In short, all this makes Extremadura an ideal destination for stargazing tourism.
