Asturias, Galicia and the Basque Country join forces on a sensory journey through the world of cider culture

'Cider Routes of Spain' offers a fresh, high-quality tourism experience in northern Spain

Asturias, Galicia and the Basque Country have joined forces to create 'Cider Routes of Spain,' a project that bridges the cider-making traditions of the region with an innovative and sustainable outlook. This initiative is supported by the Experiencias Turismo España (Tourism Experiences Spain) program and funded by the European Union. This initiative seeks to elevate cider — more than a drink, a way of life — into a distinguished national and international experience, defined by identity, quality and lasting appeal. Cider embodies landscape, history and identity. And now, it's also becoming a leading tourist experience. With this vision, this pioneering project was launched, driven by the State Secretariat for Tourism and led by the Asociación Club de Producto Sidraturismo de Asturias (Asturias Cider Tourism Product Club Association), in partnership with the Clúster de Turismo Rural (Asturias Rural Tourism Cluster), the Sagardun Consortium of the Basque Country and the Maceira e Sidra Association of Galicia.

This initiative aims to solidify cider tourism as a genuine, authentic experience with strong international appeal. It’s not just about visiting cider mills or cider houses; it’s about creating a comprehensive experience that resonates with a variety of visitors, from food lovers and culture seekers to rural explorers and families. The goal is to offer an experience akin to those centred around wine or olive oil by welcoming visitors into cider houses, showcasing the cider-making process and sharing cider culture. Tradition, innovation and sustainability are the key pillars supporting this new tourism initiative. 'Cider Routes' strives to establish Spain as a global leader in cider tourism. This involves listening to the territory, coordinating efforts and creating a competitive product that respects the cultural richness of every area while enhancing the tourism offering in northern Spain.
