Between nature and fantasy: family routes in the Sierra de la Demanda
The province of Burgos offers two magical routes combining landscape, tradition, and local creativity
Burgos invites you to discover two of its most unique routes—perfect for those seeking nature, creativity, and magical family experiences. The Path of Dreams, located in the village of Urrez, transforms the landscape with urban-knitting elements created by the locals, while the Imagination Trail, near Covarrubias, reveals a world of wrought-iron sculptures. Both routes turn the Sierra de la Demanda into a surprising and inspiring setting. Exploring the province of Burgos through its most creative routes means immersing oneself in a land where nature and imagination naturally coexist. In the Sierra de la Demanda, two trails have established themselves as must-visits for families and landscape lovers looking for a different, more intimate experience. The Path of Dreams and the Imagination Trail reveal a unique vision of the surroundings, marked by the artistic creations of its own inhabitants and the tranquility of the Burgos forests. The Path of Dreams begins at the Nativity of Our Lady Church and quickly proves it’s no ordinary trail. On the trees, walkers can admire handcrafted details: crocheted ladybugs, trunks wrapped in bright colors, and pieces created by locals who have turned urban knitting into the very essence of the trail. This community project has transformed a simple route into a sensory experience attracting those seeking an accessible walk with an identity of its own, every weekend.

The trail, around a mile long, connects with the Beech Forest Path and allows walkers to step inside an environment where oaks, mountain pines, blackthorns, and hawthorns live side by side. The Urrez beech forest, at the end of the route, adds a sense of serenity and connection with the landscape, revealing panoramic views that complete a short but meaningful day out. The second walk, the Imagination Trail, is located further south, in the surroundings of Covarrubias and just a few minutes from Hortigüela. In the Las Viñas area, visitors will discover an open-air museum, as wrought-iron characters and animals accompany this walk among the oaks. Wild boars, turtles, fantastic figures, dancers, and cyclists emerge from the vegetation, forming a universe created by local blacksmith José Luis Blanco García, who has transformed pieces of broken plows and metal parts into the sculptures that give this trail its unique character today. Some of these works can be appreciated along the trail itself, while others are partially hidden. This circular route of just over half a mile reflects the creativity of a community that has masterfully turned simple materials into art. The connection with the surrounding region is further enhanced by its proximity to historically significant towns such as Covarrubias or Santo Domingo de Silos, enriching the travel experience. Through these trails, Burgos, a land of heritage, nature, and tradition, reveals that walking can be an exercise in imagination blending landscape, art, and emotion.
