Blue Flags reinforce Spain’s standing as a sustainable and competitive destination

The country retains its position as world leader for Blue Flag beaches

Spain once again leads the way on the global tourism scene as it earns 749 Blue Flags in 2025, a figure that cements its top international position and showcases the success of sustainability policies in coastal destinations. With 642 beaches, 101 marinas, and six tourist boats recognized, Spain has earned two more awards compared to 2024, reaffirming its institutional commitment to quality, accessibility, and excellence in coastal management. The 2025 edition of the Blue Flag program confirms a trend that consolidates Spain’s reputation as a top destination for sun and beach tourism. With 749 distinctions awarded by the Spanish Association for Environmental and Consumer Education (ADEAC), Spain not only tops the global ranking for certified beaches, but also offers the third most awarded marinas in the world.

In total, 642 beaches have been awarded across 247 towns and cities, representing a 91% success rate on submitted applications. 16 beaches received Blue Flag recognition for the first time, while another 23 regained the distinction. These results highlight the impeccable quality of initiatives undertaken and the coordinated efforts between local and regional authorities. Destinations such as the Region of Valencia (143), Andalusia (138), Galicia (108), Catalonia (101), and the Canary Islands (47) stand out for their quantity of awarded beaches, while towns and cities like Sanxenxo, Vigo, and Orihuela lead the way in numbers of Blue Flags awarded.

The process’s transparency, involving 58 experts from 34 organizations, strengthens the Blue Flag’s credibility as a mark of safety, accessibility, and environmental stewardship.
