Benidorm: sun, beach and a pioneering model of sustainability
An example of how to combine tourism success with environmental friendliness
Benidorm, one of the most iconic destinations in the Region of Valencia and the Mediterranean, for its sun and beach offer, continues to reinvent itself by committing to a sustainable development model that balances respect for the environment, economic growth and social wellbeing. Thanks to its innovative urban planning and strong commitment to more responsible tourism, the city has been recognised by the European Commission with the “European Green Pioneer for Smart Tourism 2025” award. This iconic Costa Blanca destination, which has had more than 60% of its territory protected since 1956, and between 2011 and 2019 increased its urban green areas, confirms that environmental preservation and the development of tourism proposals can go hand in hand. The efficient management of the water cycle is another fundamental pillar of Benidorm’s sustainability strategy. The city has achieved an efficiency rate of 95% for its water network, making it a European leader in this field. This achievement is due to the implementation of advanced systems that allow water to be reused for irrigation, street cleaning and support for local agriculture. Since 1985, it has had a municipal laboratory that analyses the quality of the bathing water and sand, ensuring the best standards of hygiene on its beaches all year round. Benidorm’s strategy to become a more responsible city includes urban reforestation and the expansion of its green spaces. In the last decade, the number of trees in urban areas has doubled from 10,900 to 20,000, as has the area devoted to gardens and parks. These actions have reduced the temperature in certain areas of the city by up to 4°C, thus favouring a better quality of life for residents and visitors. As well as environmental sustainability, the city promotes an economic model aimed at strengthening its local productive and tourist fabric through diversification of supply. As a complement to its fine sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters, such as Levante y Poniente, Benidorm has promoted festivals such as Benidorm Fest, sporting events such as the Benidorm Half and the World Cyclo-cross Championship. At the same time, it promotes hiking routes in the Sierra Helada; or cycle tourism, thanks to over 134 kilometres of interconnected cycle lanes and paths.
