Spain Strengthens Its Position as a Leading International Destination for Spiritual and Faith-Based Tourism, According to the “2025 Portrait of American & Canadian International Travelers”
Los Angeles, November 4, 2025. – The Tourism Office of Turespaña in Los Angeles has presented the results of the report “2025 Portrait of American & Canadian International Travelers,” prepared by MMGY Travel Intelligence. The study places Spain among the top international destinations most highly rated by U.S. and Canadian travelers interested in cultural and spiritual experiences.
Religious tourism—defined as travel motivated primarily or significantly by the desire to visit places related to faith, spirituality, worship, or religious practice, whether for devotional, cultural, historical, or personal reflection purposes—has emerged as one of the key trends in the North American market. In this context, Spain stands out as a leading destination.
The study reveals that more than 70% of North American international travelers express strong interest in visiting Spain within the next three years, with particularly high enthusiasm among those motivated by religious or spiritual interests. This group identifies Spain as an exceptional destination to experience authentic expressions of faith, blending historical heritage, sacred art, and living traditions.
Among the main motivations for this type of traveler are the exploration of religious art, history, and architecture, as well as participation in culturally rich events with spiritual roots, such as Holy Week celebrations or traditional pilgrimages. Iconic experiences such as the Camino de Santiago, the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, and the interreligious heritage of Andalusia reinforce Spain’s reputation as a benchmark in spiritual tourism.
More than three out of four faith-motivated travelers (75%) believe that Spain offers more meaningful spiritual experiences than other countries such as the United States or the United Kingdom. Only India and Nepal surpass Spain in perceived spiritual and heritage richness.
The report also highlights that these travelers demonstrate a strong commitment to sustainability, with 91% willing to pay more for responsible tourism services. They place particular value on options that integrate culture, personal reflection, and connection with nature.
“According to the results obtained, religious tourism fits perfectly within the objectives of Turespaña’s new strategy, which aims to showcase a different side of Spain — focusing on inland and lesser-known destinations — while promoting sustainable practices. Spiritual tourism represents a strategic pillar in the promotion of Spain as an international destination. This segment combines cultural, sustainable, and wellness values that reflect the diversity and depth of Spanish heritage,” said Felix Alcaraz Vellisca, Tourism Counselor at the Spanish Tourism Office in Los Angeles.
